In landing on Gold, Sword, Juno, Utah and the bloodiest of them all, Omaha beaches on the coast of Northern France, the Allies started a battlefield campaign that was to take them from the killing fields of Normandy to the heart of the Nazi empire in Germany.
In Normandy, there lies over 50,000 British, American, French, Canadian and Polish troops, plus over 25,000 French civilians, killed in this fight for freedom – testimony that not only the famous landing beaches but other sites such as Pegasus Bridge and Café Gondree, captured by the 6th British Airborne Division following their daring gliderborne assault, The Merville Gun Battery capable of firing onto Sword Beach disarmed by the 9th Parachute Regiment in the early hours of DDay, the famous St. Mere Eglise liberated by the US Paras, the “Screaming Eagles”, so well depicted in the film, ‘The Longest Day’, the Pointe Du Hoc attacked and liberated by the US Rangers after their epic climb up the cliffs under murderous machine gun fire from the Germans, the village of Crepon where Sergeant Major Hollis of the 6th Green Howards won the only VC to be awarded on DDay and the village of Pavee, deep in the Normandy hedgerows (bocage) where 23 year old Corporal Sidney Bates of the Royal Norfolk Regiment posthumously won his VC, single handedly charging heavily armed troops of the 10th SS Panzer Division, saving from being overrun and slaughter, his section of Royal Norfolk troops – plus many other battlefield sites with names etched into history, which were fiercely fought over by “our boys”, as Dame Vera Lynn called them..
